WAB 2722 - Wabash Rwy |
Description: |
Built by either International Car Company in Kent, Ohio or the Wabash shops in Decatur, IL, this Wabash caboose has the slanting cupola windows which were prone to leaking according to some sources. Beginning with #2830 in 1951, a heavier aluminum framed rectangular window was used. This Wabash caboose was fortunate enough eventually to end up on display in downtown Moberly, MO, the Wabash division point and probably second only to Decatur, IL, as an important Wabash hub. It is next to the former Railway Express building and railroad museum. Unknown photographer |

Great Baldwin builder's photo of a very rare diesel. According to one online source, "At the end of WWII the US Armed Services ordered 30 road freight diesels for export to Russia to help rebuild the Russian railroad system. They were Baldwin's first export diesels. These 1000 hp units were powered with an 8 cylinder VO engine and rode on 5 foot gauge Commonwealth C-type trucks. This model was only built for the Russian export order and was designated Baldwin class "0-6-6-0 1000/1 DE". The Russian's called these Class Db." UP U50 #45 - Union Pacific |
Description: |
Interesting experiment by Union Pacific produced this stub-nosed diesel built by GE in 1965. The GE U50 was an eight-axle, 5,000 hp (3.7 MW) diesel-electric locomotive built by GE Rail. They were twin-engined locomotives, combining two 2,500 hp (1,900 kW) diesel engines. The U50 was built in response to the Union Pacific Railroad's requirement, issued in the early 1960s, for a 15,000 hp (11,200 kW) 3-unit locomotive intended to replace the turbines. This unit was retired sometime between 1973-74 and possibly traded into GE. The exact location, date and photographer are unknown. |
