In 1987, this beautiful locomotive sat outside but eventuallhy it was brought into a sheltered area after a renovation. The loco was built not far from this location by the Norfolk & Western Shops in Juen of 1943. The loco served until being reitred from regular revenue service. In 1986, it was restored to be used by NS for the steam excursions between 1987-91. It was finally donated to the Virginia Museum of Transportation for static display. |

Title: |
NW 2-6-6-4 #1218 - Norfolk Western |
Description: |
Built by the NW Roanoke Shops in June of 1943, this articulated 2-6-6-4 loco has a long and sometimes twisted history full of fluky luck, bargaining millionaires, trade negotiations and restorations. The photo was taken while #1218 was serving in the Norfolk Southern Steam Program. Later in the same year (1990), it would be on its way to an NRHS convention set in Union Station at St Louis, MO. An unknown photographer took this runby photo. |
