Title:  ATSF 4-6-2 #1211 - Atchison, Topeka & Sant Fe
Description:  Built by Burnham, Wms & Co (Baldwin) in 1903, this was the first Pacific for Santa Fe. It was their class 1200 and had 69" drivers, generated an impressive boiler pressure of 220 psi for its compound 22.5"x28" cylinders. The engine weight was 214,600 lb and it could produce a tractive effort of 38,416 lb. Later it was rebuilt by the Santa Fe shops with 79" drivers, simplified and superheated. No date, location or photographer was identified on the photo so all are approximate.

Description:  Here is an example of a 1905-06 Baldwin built Pacific for the Santa Fe. Note the curved smokestack section hanging down - was it a type of smoke deflector? Specifics - class 1226, 4-cylinder balanced compound, 17"x28" high pressure cylinders, 28"x28" low pressure cylinders, simplified and superheated by Santa Fe shops between 1918-32, retired by 1950. Description:  Built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1909, it was a Santa Fe class 1270 with 73" drivers and generatred a modest 160 psi of boiler pressure. No date, location or photographer were identified on the back of the photo so all are approximate.

Description:  ATSF 4-6-2 #1332 was built by Baldwin in November of 1911 as a 4 cylinder balanced compound locomotive but was simplified by the San Bernardino Shops in August of 1923. The loco lasted in service for nearly 38 years before being scrapped on 2/15/1949 at the Albuquerque Shops. Description:  Great action shot of ATSF 4-6-2 Pacific #1333 passing by the Stockton, CA interlocking tower. Built by Baldwin in November of 1911 originally as a 4-cylinder balanced compound, it was rebuilt to a simple style at the Albuquerque Shops in December of 1925. The loco served for 40 years before being sold for scrap in November 16, 1951 to Finkelstein Supply Company. Rebuilt simplified specs - 73" drivers, 220 psi boiler pressure, 23.5x28" cylinders, engine wt of 277,000 lb, tractive effort of 39,650 lb. Unknown photographer

Description:  No date, location or photographer was listed for this photo but it appears that the 1912 Baldwin built 4-6-2 Pacific #1344 may be sitting in a storage line or deadline but still looking good! Specs - class 1337, 73" drivers, 210 psi boiler pressure, compound cylinders simplified between 1922-27, engine weight of 284,230lb, tractive effort of 30,741 lb. Gone by 1954.

Description:  After a failed experiment with a 4-4-6-2, the Santa Fe shops rebuilt one into two Pacifics in 1915 as a new class 1398. Each Pacific had 73" drivers, could generate a boiler pressure of 200 psi for its 23.5"x28" cylinders. The engine weight of 269,390 lb and a tractive effort of 36,010 lb. Description:  Like its sister ATSF 3420 in this album, ATSF 3425 appears to be at the head of the deadline. This is another Baldwin built Pacific-type loco, class 3400. Description:  The photo is a sad one of ATSF #3504 with tender #1320 sitting in the dead/scrap line in the Albuquerque Yard. This locomotive was built by Baldwin in February of 1914 originally as a 4-cylinder balanced compound Pacific type locomotive but was later converted to a simple arrangement in November, 1921 at the Topeka Shops. The loco served for nearly 35 years before being sold for scrap to Luria Brothers Company on 11/17/1949. Note that in this photo the loco has tender #1320 - not sure why. An unnknown photographer took this photo while it sat near the end of its life.

Title:  ATSF 4-6-2 #3508 - Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe
Description:  Although a later ATSF GP38 would carry this number, the original belongs to this 1914 Baldwin Locomotive Works Pacific type loco. It was an ATSF class 3500 member with tall 73" drivers and developed a boiler pressure of 210 psi. It's tractive force was a respectable 30,741 lb. Although originally built as a compound design, it was simplified in 1921 by Santa Fe shops and increased to 220 psi. The entire class was retired between 1940-55. Date is approximate.
