Title:
CO 4-8-4 #600 - Chesapeake & Ohio
Description:
Looking very much like a builder's photo, this beautifully detailed scale model is based on the actual Lima built 4-8-4, called a "Greenbrier" rather than the traditional "Northern-type" locomotive, which was delivered to the C&O in 1935. These were among the largest 4-8-4s built. #600 is name "The George Washington" for the passenger train these locos would head up. This particular loco was named the "Thomas Jefferson".

CO 4-8-4 #601 - Chesapeake & Ohio
Description:
Fairly nice photo by Otto C. Perry of the Lima 4-8-4 Northern type steam locomotive although the C&O referred to them as "Greenbriers". The unit was delivered in December of 1935. Seen here a year after delivery, it still has its shiny boiler shell and clean white wall rims. The locos in the class were given patriotic names - this one was "Patrick Henry". The J-3 class was retired in 1953.

C&O 4-8-4 #603 - Chesapeake & Ohio RR
Description:
Nice photo of the 1935 Lima built Northern-type locomotive that the C&O called "Greenbriers", their J-3 class. The first 5 were given names - this one being labeled "Edmund Randolf" after the distinguished statesman. According to www.Steamlocomotives.com " Known as Greenbriers on the C&O, these were among the largest 4-8-4s built. According to Drury (1993), the design was based on the earlier 2-10-4. All of the engines had the same power dimensions (cylinder volume, boiler pressure setting, and driver diameter) and 14" (356 mm) piston valves. All twelve had trailing-truck boosters to raise starting tractive effort. The first two orders used Worthington Type 5-S feed water heaters." Specifics - 74" drivers, impressive 255 psi boiler pressure, 27x30" cylinders, engine weight of 477,000 lb, tractive effort of 66,453 lb. No exact date was given for this photo so an arbitrary one was used. An unknown photographer captured this moment.

Title:
C&O 4-8-4 #612 - Chesapeake & Ohio RR
Description:
Here stands one of the finest examples of a 4-8-4 ever built by Lima, delivered to the C&O in 1948. Railroad historian Eugene Huddleston noted the skepticism concerning this order (for the last 4-8-4's): "Simply amazing is the expenditure of so much money to produce a "state of the art" locomotive in the waning days of steam. It seems nothing was sacrificed to equip the new Greenbriers with the latest features and best appliances. Enthusiasm was still the word in 1947, as this writer well recalls from being told about the order for five more Greenbriers from Lima Locomotive Works by locomotive engineer Vince Hiltz." Specifics - J-3a class, 74" drivers, 255 psi boiler pressure, 27.5x30" cylinders, engine weight of 482,200 lb, tractive effort of 66,453 lb. Jim Scribbins photo

CO 4-8-4 #614 - Chesapeake & Ohio
Description:
Interesting loco built by Lima nn June of 1948. Massive, powerful and commanding to say the least and a loco with nine lives. The unit would continue long after the other Greenbriers (4-8-4's to the C&O) were retired. It was a test loco for the American Coal Enterprise as they tried developing a coal burning steam locomotive that could compete with diesel loco on a>cost basis. It also served as the Chessie Safety Special. This photo by Arthur B. Johnson.

Specifics - class J-3a, 74" drivers, 255 psi, 27.5x30" cylinders, engine weight of 482,200 lb, tractive effort of 66,453 lb. unknown photographer

CO 4-8-4 #614 - Chesapeake & Ohio
Description:
The loco with "nine lives" is serving as the head end power of the Chessie Safety Special as caught by an unidentified photographer. The loco, built by Lima in June of 1948 also served as a test loco for the Americal Coal Enterprise experiments in developing new coal burning technologies. Today it is a static display at the C&O Heritage Center in Clifton Forge, VA, while awaiting restoration.

CO 4-8-4 #614T - American Coal Enterprise (ACE) Experiment
Description:
Built by Lima in june of 1948 (serial #9306), this locomotive led a dual life serving the C&O in the mountainous West Virgina area until retirement in 1955, reborn as an excursion loco for the American Freedom Train and the Chessie Steam Special. But again it was reborn as an experimental locomotive for the American Coal Enterprise in 1985 with the new designation 614T. Here it spins on the Hinton, WV, turntable as it worked the coal fields in 1985 as part of its testing. No photographer listed.
