C&O 2-8-4 #2701 - Chesapeake & Ohio |
Description: |
From the looks of the photo with the children all over the locomotive, it appears as if this engine was recently put on display. Fits well with its history as described on SteamLocomotive website. "The C&O donated 2701 to the city of Buffalo, NY. It was placed on display near the waterfront where vandals wrecked it so bad that it had to be scrapped after being on display for only a few months." It was a K-4 class loco built by Alco in 1943. Shame it wasn't given the respect it earned serving the C&O. This is an Forrest R. Trittenbach photo. |

C&O 2-8-4 #2777 - Chesapeake & Ohio |
Description: |
Here is 1947 Alco Berkshire (C&O preferred the name "Kanawha" instead). It was a class K-4 built along the pattern of the Nickel Plate & Pere Marquette Bershires which were so successful. It had 69" drivers, developed a boiler pressure of 245 psi, and had 69,368 lb tractive force. Looks newly delivered like another loco in this album. Date is approximate. Forrest W. CO 2-8-4 #2789 Tender - Chiesapeake & Ohio |
Description: |
This is the backside of the tender, not even labeled. Sadly, the loco itself is under a long term (if ever) restoration inside the shops and not open to the public, at least when we were there. I remember taking photos of this beautiful Kanawha 2-8-4 loco back in 2011 while it was undergoing restoration. It's still there and I still have my hope to ride behind it someday! They better hurry up - I'm getting old! |
