EL 809, 817 & 812 - Erie Lackawanna |
Description: |
Much like a circus elephant parade in a head to tail arrangement, these E8A units are stacked up at Pullman Junction in Chicago, IL. These "sisters" were all built in 1951 by EMD for the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Rwy and carried their original numbers into the Erie-DLW merger. Unknown photographer. |

EL E8A #814 - Erie Lackawanna |
Description: |
Nice shot from an original color negative by an unknown photographer of 1951 EMD built Erie Lackawanna (nee-DLW) taken at an unidentified location. With the watchman's tower in the far, far right background, could this be Marion, Ohio? I have also posted earlier a photo of #814 on its "death march" through Fort Wayne, IN, in May of 1977. Date and location are approximate. |

EL E8A #814 - "Death March" |
Description: |
Still a good looking unit but from the handwritten note painted near the rear, it's on its final journey to the torches. The note states "Electromotive Divi, Gen Motors, c/o Pielet Bros, McCook, IL, 25 mph." Pielet Bros. of McCook, IL was right next to EMD and they scrapped many trade-ins to EMD. In 1977, they were in charge of scrapping a lot of the EL E-units. George Cheatwood slide |

EL E8A #827 - Erie Lackawanna |
Description: |
Eastbound EL #827 crosses Broad Street in my hometown and hits the EJE/CO/GTW/EL diamond. The diamond was a pure headache for car drivers but a pure joy for railroad enthusiasts. The unit was built by EMD for the Erie in February of 1951 (bldr #12225) and kept the same number through the Erie/DLW merger. Note the signalman's shanty to the left. It has since been moved acroos the street to the Griffith Historical Society land along with the EJE tower which would be behind the unknown photographer on this day in 1971. |
