NKP 2-8-0 #493 - Nickel Plate Road
Title:  NKP 2-8-0 #493 - Nickel Plate Road
Description:  Built by Alco-Brooks in April of 1911, it was originally Lake Shore & Michigan Southern #5308, then in 1915 Lake Erie & Western #5393 (serial #49509) before sliding over to the Nickel Plate roster as NKP 493. Specs - class G-16v, 63" drivers, 180 psi boiler pressure, 25x32" cylinders, engine weight of 236,730 lb, tractive effort of 48,571 lb. The loco was finally sold for scrap on May 29,1951 to US Steel Company. Howard W. Ameling photo

Title:  NKP 2-8-2 #512 - Nickel Plate Road
Description:  Built by Alco-Brooks in August of 1917, this powerful 2-8-2 Mikado served the New York, Chicago & St Louis (Nickel Plate) until retirement and being sold for scrap on December, 20, 1956 to the Luntz Iron & Steel Company. Specs - 63" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 24x32" cylinders, engine weight of 291,750 lb, tractive effort of 49,737 lb. The photo comes from the Howard W. Ameling collection.

Title:  NKP 2-8-2 #677, Nickel Plate Road ex-W&LE
Description:  This is an example of an Alco-Brooks Mikado originally built for the Wheeling & Lake Erie as a class M-1 "heavy Mikado" in 8/1918 and acquired by the Nickel Plate in 1949. it also had the typical 63" drivers and 200 psi boiler pressure. It met is demise when sold for scrap in 10/1955 to the Luntz Iron & Steel Co. This is an August, 1970 reprint of a C. W. Burns photo.

NKP 2-8-2 #957, ex-511 Nickel Plate Road
Title:  NKP 2-8-2 #957, ex-511 Nickel Plate Road
Description:  This original NKP 511, renumbered later to #957, is another Brooks-Alco Mikado built in 8/1917 as a class H-5b. Twenty five were built and were extremely successful in the NKP service, setting the stage for demanding more Mikados for the railroad. Unfortunately it was sold for scrap on 8/20/61 to the Luntz Iron & Steel Co. This is another C.W. Burns photo.
