Nickel Plate Road 2-8-2 #615 |
Description: |
Barrelling down the tracks and creating a trailing cloud of impressive smoke near Dear Creek, IL, with a seemingly endless string of tankers stretching behind is Nickel Plate Road #615. Built by Lima Locomotive Works of Ohio in 1920 as a class H-6b, it had 63" drivers, an overall engine+tender wheelbase of 61.19', and an engine wt 305,400 lb. Wish I could credit the photograhper for this beautiful action shot but none was listed. Sadly, it was scrapped sometime between 1945-1962. |

Description: |
Similar to its older sister, NKP 615, this steamer was also built by Lima Locomotive Works of Ohio in 1922 as a little later class H-6d. It also had 63" drivers, and overall engine+tender wheelbase of 61.19', and an engine wt 305,400 lb. Here it's pulling a mixed freight just west of Crandall, IL, on this May day in 1943. Sadly, it was scrapped sometime between 1945-1962. |

NKP 2-8-2 #624, Nickel Plate Road (New York, Chicago & St Louis) |
Description: |
Fifteen of these were built by Lima in 1922 as a class H-6d with 63" drivers and developing 200 psi. One of only three preserved NKP 2-8-2's, this one was donated to Hammond, IN on 9/13/55 and is still there but in much worse shape. The photographer C.W. Burns noted on the photo back "One of the first engines given to a city for display. Now in sad shape, but are trying to fix it up. Also will fence it." August, 1970 reprint. |

The Nickel Plate Road 2-8-2 sits across from the Hammond Civic Center as it has since 1955. Vines now encircle its wheels and the cab window sill hangs loosely in a forelorn way. |

From a distance, the Nickel Plate Road 624 looks like its on a local run through downtown Hammond like it used to do over 70 years ago. Sthll a testament to the skill of thousands who designed, maintained and ran these puffing giants of steel. |

Another of the thirty of these were by Lima Locomotive Works in 1922-23 as a class H-6e. Like the rest of the NKP Mikados, they had 63" drivers and developed 200 psi boiler pressure. It was sold for scrap on 12/20/1961 to Luntz Iron & Steel. This is the way I like to remember Nickel Plate locos - roaring down a Midwest prairie track blowing smoke skyward! |

NKP 2-8-2 #669 - Nickel Plate Road |
Description: |
Nickel Plate Road 2-8-2 Mikado #669 sits on a siding at the Frankfort roundhouse yard in this late date of 1963, possibly sitting in a storage/scrap line at this time in its life. Built by Lima in June of 1924 (serial #6860, H-6f class), it lasted to nearly the end of steam in Indiana. The photographer's name was too faint and smeared to read. |

NKP 2-8-2 #954 & NKP H12-44 #138 - Nickel Plate Road |
Description: |
Another faceoff between diesel and steam involving an early Fairbanks-Morse switcher and a traditional Lima built Mikado. Unfortunately the Mikado lost - scrapped just 6 years later while the diesel lasted until 1973. Photographer C. W. Burns notes on back " A NKP 900 series 2-8-2 approaches from the yard. #954". |
