NW 4-8-4 #610 |
Description: |
Strikingly detailed photo of a maintenance man working on the 4-8-4 Northern #610 built by the N&W shops in 1944. No information was given for this photo but it has the earmarks of an O. Winston Link photo - couldn't find it in several online sources though. Can anyone identifiy this photo? |

NW 4-8-4 #613 - Norfolk & Western |
Description: |
This was the last 4-8-4 "J" class to be built by the N&W Roanoke shops Such an iconic, streamlined beauty! According to www.steamlocomotive.com "The most powerful 4-8-4s to run for any railroad, and one of the finest steam locomotive designs ever produced, the Js combined large cylinders, high steam pressure, and low drivers to generate a high tractive effort. Available power increased when boiler pressure was raised later to 300 psi (20.7 bar), yielding an indicated tractive effort of 80,000 lb." An unknown photographer took this photo. |
