Here is another example of a Baldwin built Mikado, this one built in 12/1915, as an M-1 class loco with 61.5" drivers and 24"x32" cylinders.Nickname "Big Dutch Mikes" by the Reading shops, they were rebuilt in 1924 & again in 1943 changing cylinder size and driving wheel diameters during the process and reclassified as an M-1sa class. RDG 2-8-2 #1718 - Reading |
Description: |
Standing in the Reading engine terminal is RDG 2-8-2 Mikado #1718 built by Baldwin in November of 1915 (serial #42684). The loco was later rebuilt by the Reading shops during the WWII years between 1941-43 to a class M-1sa. It lasted until retirement in December of 1949 when diesels arrived on the scene. A note on the back by photographer Alton E. Bowers states " RDG Co. #1718 (2-8-2) class M-1-21 with tender booster at engine terminal, Reading, PA." Rebuilt specs - 61.5" drivers, 215 psi boiler pressure, 25x32" cylinders, engine weight of 334,425 lb, tractive effort of 62,200 lb. |
