CBQ AA #9903 - Injun Joe"
Title:  CBQ AA #9903 - Injun Joe"
Description:  Built for the CB&Q in 1935, this EMC engine and cars in the Mark Twain Zephyr have led a colorful and sometimes neglected life. The train set bounced from one private owner to another until Greg Vreeland of the Wisconsin Great Northen tourist train purchased it on February 19, 2020 with major plans to restore it to running service. And he is making good on the dream!!!

CBQ AA #9903 - Injun Joe"
Title:  CBQ AA #9903 - Injun Joe"
Description:  The power unit, "Injun Joe", was part of a fixed articulated train that originally ran between St Louis, MO and Burlington, IA. However, it was used on several CB&Q routes until retirement in April of 1958. The Budd Company designed and built the streamlined, articulated set originally containing four cars carrying names from Mark Twain's writings. This car was powered by a 660 hp, 8-cylinder, 2-cycle Winton 201A Diesel engine designed by General Motors, and built by the Winton Engine Division of Electro Motive Corporation. It ran on ordinary fuel oil and operated with no spark plugs or ignition system, combustion being accomplished solely through high compression. The engine directly powered a General Electric GT-534 main generator, which provided current to two, GE model 716 traction motors mounted on the first truck. The lead truck had 36-inch wheels for traction, while all the others only had 30-inch wheels. The gear ratio of the power truck was 52:25 for a rated maximum speed of 117 miles per hour.

CBQ AA #9903 - Injun Joe"
Title:  CBQ AA #9903 - Injun Joe"
Description:  The power car, "Injun Joe", has been cleared of the older prime mover with necessary changes made to hold a new prime mover. Everything is going to plan. On September 12, 2023, the shovel nosed stainless steel power unit was placed back on its trucks. This was a banner day for the restoration project. Wish we had visited there just a little later than we did just so we could see the trucks in place!
