CIM 2-10-2 #701 - Chicago & Illinois Midland
Title:  CIM 2-10-2 #701 - Chicago & Illinois Midland
Description:  Here was a solid example of the "power at speed" Lima Locomotive Works motto. Built by Lima in 1931, this Santa Fe type loco was an H-1 class, one of only 4 built for the CIM. It had 63" drivers, developed 200 psi boiler pressure for its 30"x32" cylinders. THe engine weighed in at a hefty 405,600 lb, heavier than its counterpart built by Baldwin, and could generated a massive tractive effort of 77,714 lbs. It and its sisters worked until the end of the steam era and all were scrapped in 1955. Date is approximate and unfortunately no photographer was listed.

IC 2-10-2 #2809 - Illinois Central
Title:  IC 2-10-2 #2809 - Illinois Central
Description:  Here is an example of a Lima built 2-10-2 built between 1920-23 that underwent a major rebuild by the IC Paducah shops in 1944-45. The loco was then renumbered 2809. The 20 rebuilt 2-10-2's were eventually scrapped between 1957-62. One sideline note - the IC didn't call this 2-10-2 wheel configuration a "Santa Fe" loco like most railroads did. They preferred the term "Central" for the 2-10-2 config. No date, location or photographer was given for the photo so approximates were used.

Illinois Central 2-10-2 #2819
Title:  Illinois Central 2-10-2 #2819
Description:  Originally built by Lima in 1923, it was rebuilt and renumbered by IC. The 2-10-2 wheel arrangement was usually labeled as "Santa Fe" but with the 125 ordered from Lima they were known as "Centrals" instead. Used for freight hauling, this class was torn apart & rebuilt by the IC Paducah shops into different wheel arrangements like 2-8-2, 2-10-0, 4-8-2 and even 0-10-0. The class was scrapped between 1958-62.

IC 2-10-2 #3004 - Illinois Central
Title:  IC 2-10-2 #3004 - Illinois Central
Description:  Long before a GP40 wore the number 3004, this Lima 2-10-2 Santa Fe type locomotive built in January of 1923 held the number, IC #3004. The IC Shops rebuilt the loco in October of 1943 and renumbered it to IC 2727. It fell to the scrapper's torch after retirement in December of 1959. Original loco specs from SteamLocomotives.com - 63" drivers, 190 psi boiler pressure, 30x32" cylinders, engine weight of 382,000 lb, tractive effort of 73,829. Part of the 2901 class were rebuilt into 4-8-2's while the rest had many improvements along the way including raising the boiler pressure to 240 psi. Several differences in online resources can be attributed to the various upgrades that were applied to some and not others over several years. No photographer was listed for this photo.

BO 2-10-2 #6184 - Baltimore & Ohio
Title:  BO 2-10-2 #6184 - Baltimore & Ohio
Description:  Here's a fairly good looking and powerful member of the B&O roster, B&O 2-10-2 #6154. The loco was built by the Lima Locomotive Works in June of 1926 as part of the third round of 2-10-2's ordered for the B&O. The large tractive effort generated by the locomotive (84,300 lb) proved to be very handy in the Allegheny mountains. Unfortunately after nearly 29 years of service, the loco met the scrapper's torch in 1953. Specs - S-1a class, 64" drivers, 220 psi boiler pressure, 30x32" cylinders, engine weight of 436,510 lb, tractive effort of 84,300 lb. No date, location or photographer was listed for this photo.
