LIRR RS3 #1556 - Long Island RR |
Description: |
Thanks to the recent comments from Mike Woodruff (see below), this unmarked photo has now been identified as a photo taken at the "Operation Changeover" (or "End of Steam Ceremony") when steam locos gave way to diesels. With the two steam engines in the background, the new Long Island RS3 built by Alco in August-Sept of 1955 looks sharp and clean and ready to take over the duties from the steam locos, LIRR 35 & 39. Engines 35 and 39 each pulled a single coach to the station with local Boy Scouts on board. Upon arriving, the coaches were uncoupled from the two steam engines, and each coupled to an Alco RS3 diesel locomotive. 35 and 39 were then coupled nose to nose, and ran west to the shops at Morris Park. 35 would run one more fantrip the following week. Built by the PRR shops in May of 1918, #1361 survives today albeit not in the same location. Interesting note by the unknown photographer -"K-4 #1361, an early K-4, gleams like new. (I was surprised to see a fence around this marvelous machine, felt it was a shame to cage it like a beast), here at it's permanent home at the curve. The locomotive is a gift to the city of Altoon from the PRR." Now preserved at the Altoona RR Memorial Museum |

PRR 4-6-2 #1533 - Pennsylvania RR |
Description: |
Here is a PRR Pacific loco built in the PRR Juniata shops in 1918. The photo had a lengthy personal note on the back - "Culver, IN. Dear Dad, As you know, have inherited the old South Bend Branch and have been to So, Bend, Lakeville, La Paz Jct, Hibbard and am now here at Culver. Been thinking about you all day & here is the old train you used to run. Wish you were along, Love, Tom" The author is referring to the South Bend Branch that was originally part of the Vandalia RR, then Pennsylvania RR. Under Penn Central and Conrail, the line was eventually abandoned between South Bend and Logansport. It used to carry large shipments of Studebaker automobiles from South Bend and was famous for its doodlebug passenger service. Specifics - K-4s class, tall 80" drivers, 205 psi boiler pressure, 27x28" cylinders, engine weight of 304,500 lb, tractive effort of 44,460 lb. No actual date or photographer was listed so an approximate date was used. |

The loco served for over 39 years before being scrapped in November of 1951. The loco on the left is difficult to read its number - something like 5232 or 5982. No location, date, or photographer was listed for this photo unfortunately. Thanks to Tom Beckett and especially Robert Hess (see comments below) for the interesting info on these and identifying the locaiton. Thanks to both of you! |
