MILW 261 & CBQ 3006
Title:  MILW 261 & CBQ 3006
Description:  During the 1996 annual Galesburg RR Days festival, two sharp looking locos stand next to each other. MILW 261, a 1944 Alco 4-8-4, was on display before heading up fan excursions at the festival. CBQ 3006, a 1930 4-6-4 Baldwin, is on permanent display at the Galesburg station. Both are excellent examples of steam in its heyday!

MILW 4-8-4 #265 - Milwaukee Road
Title:  MILW 4-8-4 #265 - Milwaukee Road
Description:  An young woman gazes as the rusting display locomotive built by Alco in 1944 and donated to the city of Milwaukee for display. Fortunately this has a happier ending. The loco was transferred to a covered building at the Illinois Railway Museum in Union, IL and has had some cosmetic restoration done. Hopefully if someone with deep pockets steps forward, maybe MILW #265 could join her sister #261 as a operational steamer again. Unknown photographer.

TRBX 4-8-4 #1111 - Timken Roller Bearing Co
Title:  TRBX 4-8-4 #1111 - Timken Roller Bearing Co
Description:  Beautiful Alco-Schenectady 4-8-4 Northern type steam locomotive that served the Timken Roller Bearing Company as their demonstrator for a year. Nicknamed "Timken Four Aces", this loco was built to demonstrate the unique advantages of having all sealed roller bearings rather than plain bearings or a combination of the two. It was demonstrated on 14 different railroads and by August of 1931, had run over 90,000 miles when it was delivered to the Northern Pacific, the 15th and last demonstration. While under their use, it suffered serious crown sheet damage that NP refused to repair. Timken and NP finally settled the problem through the sale to Northern Pacific, becoming their #2626. Specs - serial #68056, 73" drivers, impressive 250 psi boiler pressure, 27x30" cylinders, engine weight of 371,000 lb, tractive effort of 63,700 lb. NP 4-8-4 #2610 - Northern Pacific
Title:  NP 4-8-4 #2610 - Northern Pacific
Description:  Beautiful and powerful was this Alco-Schenectady 4-8-4 Northern style steam locomotive built in January of 1927. She was a member of the class A group, the very first 4-8-4's built for North American railroads after collaboration between Alco and Northern Pacific. The wheel type name was literally a shortening of the orginal label of "Northern Pacifics". After these beauties started in revenue service replacing double header Pacific sets, there was a sudden drop in use of helper engines throughout their service area due to the increased horsepower of these locos. Of the eventual 49 iconic Northern Pacific Northerns that were built for the NP by vairous companies, none have survived the scrap yards.

Title:  CRIP 4-8-4 #5027 - Chicago, Rock Island, & Pacific
Description:  Here is another example of a 1930 Alco-Schenectady built 4-8-4 Northern type locomotive for the Rock Island RR. According to Drury (1993) in Steamlocomotives.com, this design's size and weight limited their operation to the Chicago-Des Moines corridor, the Chicago-Dalhart, Texas line, and the segment between Herington, Kan and El Reno, Okla. Later bridge-strengthening allowed these heavyweights to pull freights and passenger trains to Denver, Fort Worth, Tucumcari, and Minneapolis. NYC 4-8-4 #6000 - New York Central
Title:  NYC 4-8-4 #6000 - New York Central
Description:  Very intriguing photo here. This is the iconic NYC 4-8-4 Niagra (NYC's nickname for Northerns) without its massive elephant ear smoke deflectors. Although built by Alco-Schenectady as the first line production unit delivered in 1945, the date on the photo is August 10, 1945. The loco seems a bit worn for this date and the missing smoke deflectors just adds to the confusion. The location does fit with the Lake Shore Limited run that these sleek machines used to head up however. No photographer listed for the photo.

NYC 4-8-4 #6010 Tender
Title:  NYC 4-8-4 #6010 Tender
Description:  Nice rear shot of the 14 wheeled tender built for the fast and powerful Alco-Schenectady 4-8-4 Niagras (NYC's nickname for the Northerns) built beginning in 1945. The tender had a small water capacity (18,000 US gallons; 68,000 litres) in the tender, because the New York Central was one of the few in North America which used track pans. This allowed a larger coal capacity—46 tons—so the New York to Chicago run could be done with one stop for coal. The fourteen wheeled tenders were impressive and sleek accompaniment to the stylish loco. Unknown photographer from the Rail Photo Service.

GTW 4-8-4 #6323
Title:  GTW 4-8-4 #6323
Description:  Taken during a Michigan Railroad Club trip sometime around December of 1960, this jewel had a rich history as being the last GTW steam engine to run on GTW rails, under GTW ownership. It then served as power for the Michigan RR Club fan trips as well as the Ford Assn trips to Port Huron. Now it resides at the Illinois Railway Museum as only one of two surviving GTW 4-8-4's.

UP 4-8-4 #8444
Title:  UP 4-8-4 #8444
Description:  Beautiful shot of last Union Pacific 4-8-4 Northern type steam locomotive to be built by Alco-Schenectady in 12/24/1944. it is one of UP's oldest serving locomotives[3] and the only steam locomotive owned by a North American Class I railroad that has never been retired. Although no date, location or photographer was listed with the negatives that this was made from, it appears to be the Denver Union Station in the background. The number 8444 was used between 1962-89 due to new diesels taking its original 844 number. This very well may be the Chyenne Western Days special from Denver to Cheyenne.
