PRR DD1 #28 - Pennsylvania RR |
Description: |
Built by the Juniata shops in 1910, this is one of those cross-over locoomotives that had steam engine characteristics but ran on DC. These were semi-permanently coupled pairs. The unknown photographer made notes about it in terms of a steam locomotive - "4-4-4-4 type, class DD-1, 72" drivers, 313,000 lb weight, exerts 66,000 lbs tractive effort." Caught here in Morris Park Engine Yard, outside Long Island. The sepia photo lost details when flipped to b&w so left it untouched. |

A diesel engine instead of the original electric catenary system and an hydrostatic transmission was installed to permit easier use making the original catenary power system unnecessary |

Closeup of the Portuguese builder's plate. The translation of "Construido nas oficinas da Comp. Carris de Ferro do Porto 1930" loosely reads "Built in the Comp workshops. Porto Iron Rails, 1930." |

French Lick & West Baden Trolley #1 |
Description: |
The throttle of the 1930 trolley sits on the control panel which has labels in Portuguese. Surprisingly, the control panel at opposte end of the trolley has its markings in English! When the trolley has to switch directions for a return trip, the throttle handle is removed and carried to the opposite end control panel. |

French Lick & West Baden Trolley #1 |
Description: |
The opposite end control panel from the previous photo shows the console markings in English, rather than the Portuguese at the opposite end. Note the throttle handle is missing. The conductor moves it to the end he needs according to the direction he wants to head. Hence, the trollwy is never turned around but instead does the "ping pong" action, much like the old Lionel toy trolley with its reversing bumper. |

Lastly, the benches were reversible direction type but not sure they are capable of doing that now. At least, when we took the ride, half of the seats faced one way and half faced the other. |
