CHGX #509 - Chicago Gravel Co
Title:  CHGX #509 - Chicago Gravel Co
Description:  Here's a real boomer of the industrial switcher world! Built by Whitcomb in August of 1941 (bn #60105) for the munitions contractor Day & Zimmerman as their #4-44, it was sold to the US Army as #7308 during WWII. Next it was sold to McGraw Construction Co, then bounced to the Chicago Gravel Co of South Elgin, IL, as their #509. Then it was traded to the Port of Indiana in 1984 and painted red, white & blue as their #1776. Finally it was sold to the Hoosier Valley RR Museum as their #27 in 1988 where it resides today, still working the rails. T.R. Lawson photo

HVRM 44tonner #509 - Hoosier Valley RR Museum
Title:  HVRM 44tonner #509 - Hoosier Valley RR Museum
Description:  This little workhorse I suspect is the shop "goat" to help move pieces at the museum. Originally built in August of 1941 as Durham & Southern #4-44, it finally found a new home at the museum.
