EBT 4-6-0 #4, "Cromwell" - East Broad Top
Title:  EBT 4-6-0 #4, "Cromwell" - East Broad Top
Description:  Here is a very old reprint of the East Broad Top ten wheeler locomotive "Cromwell, later given the number 4, with its crew and possibly owners or riders posing by it. Some discrepancy in sources for the builder but most agree that this locomotive was built by Burnham, Wm & Co (Baldwin) in 1901. Specifics - 48" drivers, 160 psi boiler pressure, 16x20" cylinders, very modest engine weight of 80,000 lb and tractive effort of 14,507 lb. The locomotive worked EBT for 33 years before retirement in December of 1934. No photographer was listed.

SIRY 4-6-0 #23 - Southern Indiana Rwy
Title:  SIRY 4-6-0 #23 - Southern Indiana Rwy
Description:  This appears to be an original sepia stained Burnham, Wms & Co builder's photo of the Southern Indiana Rwy 4-6-0 ten wheeler #23. Although the date listed here is 1/1/1900 due to the limitations of the RRPA data base, the actual build date was April, 1898. The Indiana Southern Rwy was a subsidiary of the massive Chicago Milwaukee & St Paul. In 1904, it was renumbered SIRY #303 and in 1910 CTH&SE #303. The loco was absorbed into the CM&StP roster in 1923 as #2182 and reclassified as G4-f. By 1925, the loco had been purchased by Deering S.W. Rwy as their #10. Again in 1928 it was sold to an unknown party. Disposition of this loco is unknown. Original specs - serial #15890, class 21 (later G4-f), 56" drivers, 180 psi boiler pressure, 17x24" cylinders, modest engine weight of 108,000 lb, modest tractive effort of 18,950 lb.

SIRY 4-6-0 #23 - Southern Indiana Rwy
Title:  SIRY 4-6-0 #23 - Southern Indiana Rwy
Description:  The Southern Indiana Railway was a short line in Indiana built to access the coal fields found there. Eventually it fell under the control of Chicago Milwaukee & St Paul (later, CMStP&P, later still, Milwaukee Road) in order to take advantage of the coal supply heading north to Chicago. The coal fields finally went defunct and along with the Milwaukee's financial problems caused trackage reductions. Jumping to 2006, the Indiana Rail Road took control of the remaining section of trackage between Terre Haute and Bedford. Only memories of the Southern Indiana Rwy remain.

VT 4-6-0 #25 - Virginia & Truckee
Title:  VT 4-6-0 #25 - Virginia & Truckee
Description:  Originally built by Baldwin in January of 1905, this was the 2nd VT #25 on the roster. After serving the Virginia & Truckee for nearly 42 years, it was sold to RKO Radio Pictures and starred in many movies through the years. Somehow it finally ended up at the Nevada State RR Museum where avid amateur railfan Jim Lockart photographed it on one of his trips to the West.

AA 4-6-0 #111 - Ann Arbor RR
Title:  AA 4-6-0 #111 - Ann Arbor RR
Description:  Built by Baldwin in 1902 and originally carrying the number 52, this ten-wheeler type locomotive was a class F4 with 62" drivers, developed 180 psi boiler pressure and had a tractive effort of 23,162 lb. It was rebuilt several times with different numbers of tubes each time and renumbered as well. On the last rebuild, it ended up as #154. According to the Ann Arbor Technical & Historical Society, it was scrapped on 2/28/1933 in Owosso, MI. No date or photographer were listed. With the help from several comments on the photo and based on the photo paper quality, I now believe the date to be closer to the Nov. 30, 1918 date shown on the billboard to the lower right - still is approximate but closer!

RDG 4-6-0C #560 - Philadelphia & Reading (Reading)
Title:  RDG 4-6-0C #560 - Philadelphia & Reading (Reading)
Description:  Both RDG 560 & its sister #556 are sitting in the Newton, PA, yard with steam up and ready to roll. Built by Burham, Wms & Co (Baldwin) in 1890, this was originally an L1-a class. Original specifics - 61.5" drivers, modest 145 psi boiler pressure for its double set of 20x24" cylinders, engine weight of 136,525 lb, modest tractive effort of 19,239. Between 1921-29, the class was rebuilt by Reading shops and reclassified as their L-3se class as it appears here. Superheated, it produced an impressive 200 psi boiler pressure and delivered an improved tractive effot of 34,785 lb. No photographer listed for this photo. I have to admit, I find the camelback locos weird but fascinating creatures in the history of railroading!
