AFT 4-8-4 #1 - American Freedom Train
Title:  AFT 4-8-4 #1 - American Freedom Train
Description:  Restored cosmetically to one of its paint schemes while it served on the American Freedom Train, this former Reading 4-8-4 T1 class locomotive #2101 actually started out as a 1923 Baldwin built 2-8-0 Consolidation. Needing more power, the Reading Shops (with help from Baldwin) converted 30 2-8-0 Consolidations into 4-8-4 Northern style locos. The locomotive was pulled from the Streigel Supply Company (scrap yard) and remarkably overhauled in just 30 days back in early 1975. After two years of serving as one of the American Freedom Train steam locomotives, it was retire and converted to the Chessie Steam Special which ran another two years. A disasterous roundhouse fire ended her active career. She was donated to the B&O Museum where she underwent cosmetic restoration. Unknown photographer.

Title:  AFT 4-8-4 #1 - American Freedom Train
Description:  Here is another view taken by an unknown photographer while on display outside the historic B&O raoundhouse at the Museum. One interesting sidenote from an AFT website states that when this locomotive was fully ballasted with coal and water, it could produce more pulling power than a 707 jet at take-off.

RFP 4-8-4 #553, "General J.E.B. Stuart" - Richmond, Fredericksburg & Potomac RR
Title:  RFP 4-8-4 #553, "General J.E.B. Stuart" - Richmond, Fredericksburg & Potomac RR
Description:  This is an example of one of the most elegant steam locomotives that Baldwin ever built. When delivered in 1936, RFP refused to use the term "Northerns" for the mighty 4-8-4 configuration. Instead they chose the class label of "Generals" for the first five with each one named after a Virginia Civil War general like this one for General Jeb Stuart. Specifics - 77" drivers, 275 psi boiler pressure, 27x30" cylinders, 466,040 lb engine weight, 66,391 lb tractive effort. No photographer was listed for this photo nor an exact date.

Description:  Here is another example of a 1936 Baldwin built 4-8-4 "General" class (RFP refused to call them "Northerns" possibly because the southern influence was still strong in 1936!). This one bore the name "General A.P. Hill", another of Virginia's esteemed Civil War Generals. Specifics - 77" drivers, 275 psi boiler pressure, 27x30" cylinders, 466,040 lb engine weight, 66,391 lb tractive effort.

RFP 4-8-4 #555, "General J.E. Johnson" - Richmond, Fredericksburg & Potomac
Title:  RFP 4-8-4 #555, "General J.E. Johnson" - Richmond, Fredericksburg & Potomac
Description:  This is another fine example of the 1936 Baldwin built 4-8-4 "Generals" class locomotive, this one named after Virginia's Civil War Generals, J.E. Johnson". According to one source, "Amazingly, they (the 4-8-4's) were several inches too wide to properly clear the tunnels in Washington. More importantly they had too heavy of an axle-load to traverse the Long Bridge. These two factors forever consigned these beautiful engines to the Virginia side of the river and freight service. Although they were pressed into emergency passenger service on occasion, they always stayed on the south side of the river." Specifics - 77" drivers, 275 psi boiler pressure, 27x30" cylinders, 466,040 lb engine weight, 66,391 lb tractive effort. No date, location or photographer was listed for this beautiful photograph.

RFP 4-8-4 #619 - "Automatic Train Control"
Title:  RFP 4-8-4 #619 - "Automatic Train Control"
Description:  Sporting the "Automatic Train Control" sign is this 1944 Baldwin 4-8-4 Northern built as RFP #619. Much like a very early Positive Train Control system of today, Automatic Train Control was a system designed in 1922 by Union Switch & Signal for the PRR who called it Pulse Code Cab Signal. Itvworked by sending metered pulses along an existing AC track circuit operating at a chosen carrier frequency. The pulses were detected via induction by a sensor hanging a few inches above the rail before the leading set of wheels. The codes would be transmitted to the train from the block limit in front of it. This way if the rail was broken or another train entered the block, any codes would not reach the approaching train and the cab signal would again display "Restricting". No date or photographer was listed for this photo.

RFP 4-8-4 #619 - "Automatic Train Control"
Title:  RFP 4-8-4 #619 - "Automatic Train Control"
Description:  Here is another view of Richmond, Fredericksburg & Potomac 4-8-4 #619 wearing the "Automatic Train Control" sign denoting the use of Pulse Code Cab Signal system designed by Union Swithc & Signal in 1922 for stopping trains. This early, simplistic system is the forerunner of the modern Postive Train Control system of today. The system is failsafe in that the lack of code would display a Restricting signal. The codes would be transmitted to the train from the block limit in front of it. This way if the rail was broken or another train entered the block, any codes would not reach the approaching train and the cab signal would again display Restricting. Description:  Normally I don't post photos of photos but this is another one of the exceptions. A note on the back of this older b&w photo states "Outside Cumberland east. With Mark Reever's help (see comment below), the photo must have been taken between 1947-53. Also, Nick Chillianis (see comment below) added the final disposition of this loco -"Pulled from service in 1954 but sat until their equipment trusts expired in 1957, when they were sold for scrap." ACL 4-8-4 #1805 - Atlantic Coast Line
Title:  ACL 4-8-4 #1805 - Atlantic Coast Line
Description:  This builder's photo shows the absolutely beautiful designed 4-8-4 Northern style locomotive built by Baldin in 1938 for the Atlantic Coast Line. According to www.steamlocomotive.com "These new 4-8-4s began to handle trains with as many as 21 heavyweight cars, eliminating the need for double-heading and running extra sections of many of the Richmond, VA to Jacksonville, FL "Specials". The ACL was very disappointed with their R-1s, and returned them to Baldwin for better counterbalancing of the 80 inch drive wheels. It seems the R-1s, as delivered, had a bad dynamic augment. Even after Baldwin checked their math, and put new disk drivers on the ACL R-1s, they still had unacceptable amounts of dynamic augment at high speeds. As soon as the ACL could replace them with EMD E-3 and E-6 diesel electrics, the Standard Railroad of the South put hts latest and largest steamers in freight service." Specs - class R1, 80" drivers, 275 psi boiler pressure, 27x30" cylinders, engine weight of 460,270 lb, tractive effort of 63,901 lb. The class was retired in 1951-52.

BMRG 4-8-4 #2102 - Blue Mountain & Reading
Title:  BMRG 4-8-4 #2102 - Blue Mountain & Reading
Description:  Great face shot of a survivor. Reading 4-8-4 #2102 built by Baldwin in 1923 as a 2-8-0 was rebuilt in 1945 as a 4-8-4. Having survived that, it was used in freight service for the Reading until 1956 when it was stored away. The loco was sold to Steam Tours of Akron, OH in 1967. Then it landed on the Blue Mountain & Reading tourist railroad in 1985 where it ran excursions like this photo taken by Scott A. Jenks. In 1990, BMRG reorganized into the Reading, Blue Mountain & Northern (RBMN) where the loco is undergoing restoration with hopes of hitting the rails again.
