Description: |
Strikingly detailed photo of a maintenance man working on the 4-8-4 Northern #610 built by the N&W shops in 1944. No information was given for this photo but it has the earmarks of an O. Winston Link photo - couldn't find it in several online sources though. Can anyone identifiy this photo? |

NW 4-8-4 #613 - Norfolk & Western |
Description: |
This was the last 4-8-4 "J" class to be built by the N&W Roanoke shops Such an iconic, streamlined beauty! According to www.steamlocomotive.com "The most powerful 4-8-4s to run for any railroad, and one of the finest steam locomotive designs ever produced, the Js combined large cylinders, high steam pressure, and low drivers to generate a high tractive effort. Available power increased when boiler pressure was raised later to 300 psi (20.7 bar), yielding an indicated tractive effort of 80,000 lb." An unknown photographer took this photo. |

CP 4-8-4 #3100 - Canadian Pacific |
Description: |
One of only two massive and powerful 4-8-4's to be built by the Canadian Pacific. This one was built in the Angus Shops in August of 1928. Specs - K1a class, 75" drivers, impressive 275 psi boiler pressure, 25.5x30" cylinders, engine weight of 423,000 lb, tractive effort of 60,798 lb. Only two were built. These engines proved too heavy for all but the Montreal-Toronto line, where they pulled the night trains #21 Chicago Express and #22 Overseas Express for 25 years. J.R. Quinn photo |

Beautiful and powerful - two words that best fit the Canadian Pacific 4-8-4 #3101 built by the CP's own Angus Shops in October of 1928. Watch a fantastic historical video of the building of this loco on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NcbTXlMSCwk/) J. R. Quinn photo |

B&O 4-4-4-4 #5600 - Baltimore & Ohio |
Description: |
Being the only duplex drive locomotive B&O built and used, it has a special place in railroading history. Built by the B&O shops in May, 1938, it proved unsatisfactory for a number of reasons and was eventually pulled from service in 1943. B&O expressed no further interest in duplex drives as a result. |
