DNM 2-8-2 #14 - Duluth and Northern Minnesota
Title:  DNM 2-8-2 #14 - Duluth and Northern Minnesota
Description:  Much smaller than the massive DMIR 2-8-8-4 #227 is this Duluth & Northern Minnesota 2-8-2 Mikado #14 built by Baldwin in 1913. Its primary work was in the logging industry of Minnesota. It did run an occasional passenger train later in its work history and well as iron ore until downgraded to being in "portable" stationary boiler service. In 1974, plans were made to eventually donate it to the Lake Superior RR Museum. It actually had a starring role in the Disney movie "Iron Will."

Title:  WPY 2-8-2 #73 - White Pass & Yukon
Description:  Custom built by Baldwin in 1947, this narrow gauge Mikado has led an interestings life. According to Wikipedia "It was built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works for the White Pass and Yukon Route in 1947. After retirement in 1964, the locomotive was moved to Bennett, British Columbia, in 1968 for display. In 1979 the locomotive was moved again to Whitehorse, Yukon, this time to be restored. Restoration was completed in 1982, and the locomotive has been back in service since then. It is currently the larger of two operating steam locomotives on the line." No location was given but probably near Whitehorse, Alaska. Date is approximate. James G. Gerstley photo credit

ESNA 2-8-2 #226 - Eureka Springs & North Arkansas
Title:  ESNA 2-8-2 #226 - Eureka Springs & North Arkansas
Description:  Piecing together the history of this loco has been a challenge. It was originally built for the Dierks Lumber & Coal Company by Baldwin Locomotive in May of 1927. Sometime after retirement, it was on dispaly at the company's yard in De Queen, AK. Later it showed up as a "display" engine at the Eureka Springs & North Arkansas RR. It was never restored to operating condition. Since this photo was taken somtime in the 1990's, the loco has moved on to Anna, TX and is up for sale as of 2023. Partial original specs - coal-burner converted to oil, 180 psi boiler pressure, superheated. Rail fan Jim Lockart took this color slide whle visiting there sometime in the 1990's.

LV 2-8-2 #305 - Lehigh Valley
Title:  LV 2-8-2 #305 - Lehigh Valley
Description:  Long before a GP18 loco wore the number LV 305, this Baldwin built 2-8-2 Mikado had the honor. Built in December of 1912 (serial #38993), the loco was an N-2 class member. LV 2-8-2 #390 - Lehigh Valley
Title:  LV 2-8-2 #390 - Lehigh Valley
Description:  This 1916 Baldwin built 2-8-2 Mikado #390 (serial #42958) was one of 45 locos in the unusual class labeled N-2 1/2. These Mikes repeated the Wootten-firebox N-2s that had brought such a large boiler to the LV through the adoption of 21-ft long tubes. The one difference (and it was an important one) was the use of 62" (later 63") drivers in place of the N-2's 56" (1422 mm) wheels. Unknown photographer took this photo

Description:  Baldwin built 42 Mikados during 1909-10 for the Virginian creating their class MB. They had 56" drivers, developed a boiler pressure of 190 psi for their 22"x28" cylinders. Engine weight was 269,000 lb and this Mikado could apply a tractive effort of 53,157 lb. EW King, Jr., writing in Drury (1993) says, "...they literally did everything on the Virginian: switching, pusher duty, coal drags, work trains, fast freights, mixed runs, and passenger trains.". Date and location are unknown so approximates are listed. Warren W. McCleary Jr photo

DRGW 2-8-2ng #463 - Denver & Rio Grande Western
Title:  DRGW 2-8-2ng #463 - Denver & Rio Grande Western
Description:  Battling snow in the Western Rockies was a standard chore for the 1903 Baldwin built 2-8-2 narrow gauge Mikado wearing the Denver & Rio Grande Western logo. In this photo by an unknown photographer, it's caught with a blade full of snow as it clears the track for passage for a later freight train later in the day. No accurate date was given for the photo but since the loco was sold to Gene Autry in 1955, it must be a prior date. The loco was eventually donated to the City of Antonito in 1972. Some 22 years later in 1994, it was rebuilt and entered into service on the Cumbres & Toltec where it is today.
