MILW 2-8-2 #753 - Chicago, Milwaukee, St Paul & Pacific
Title:  MILW 2-8-2 #753 - Chicago, Milwaukee, St Paul & Pacific
Description:  This was the first Milwaukee Road to carry the number 753 - later a Fairbanks Morse H12-44 would carry the same number. This loco was built by Milwaukee shops in 1909 as their L1 class Mikado. The original number was 8103 but renumbered later. It had 63" drivers, could develop 200 psi of boiler pressure to feed to the 24"x30" cylinders. The engine weight was 260,500 lb and it could create a tractive effort of 46,629 lbs. Although most of this class served into the 1950's, the railroad eventually scrapped the class between 1945-54. No photographer was listed and the date is an approximation.

PRR 2-8-2 #1374 - Pennsylvania RR
Title:  PRR 2-8-2 #1374 - Pennsylvania RR
Description:  This is an example from the 574 "Mikado" type locomotives built by PRR between 1914-1917. A member of the L1s class, it had 62" drivers, developed 205 psi boiler pressure for its 27"x30" cylinders (diameter and stroke). Similar parts were used for these Mikados as were used in the famous class K-4 Pacifics - identical boilers and the same Belpaire firebox as well as many other mechanical parts - thus making repairs much easier. PRR 2-8-2 #1449 - Pennsylvania RR
Title:  PRR 2-8-2 #1449 - Pennsylvania RR
Description:  Excellent example of a 1918 PRR Altoona Shops built 2-8-2 Mikado caught at the 28th Street yard in Pittsburgh by an unknown photographer. A long-time PRR engineer claimed in the mid-1920s "the best all-purpose locomotive that had been developed thus far [on the Pennsy] was the L1s. It could run fast, steam easily, ride well, and, despite its rather large size for a Mikado, it was economical to operate." Specs - L1s class, 62" drivers, 204.5 psi boiler pressure, 27x30" cylinders, engine weight of 315,000 lb, tractive effort of 61,315 lb.

RDG 2-8-2 #1700
Title:  RDG 2-8-2 #1700
Description:  This was the original experimental Mikado-type locomotive built by the Reading shops in 1912 to test the 2-8-2 configuration. The loco had 61.5" diameter drivers, 24" x 32" cylinders, and a 215 psi boiler pressure. It exerted 54,772 pounds of tractive effort and it weighed 329,310 pounds. The firebox was 326 square feet, the evaporative heating surface was 4,224 square feet and with the superheater the combined heating surface was 5,217 square feet. The design of this 2-8-2 which was given road number 1700 was deemed to be a success leading to futher Mikados on Reading's roster. No photographer was listed for this nice action shot.
