FV - 4-4-0 No Number - Fairmount & Veblen |
Description: |
Rare 1958 reprint of the Fairmount & Veblen 4-4-0 that was involved in an accident. The F&V was a short line between Richland County, North Dakota and Roberts/Marshall counties in South Dakota. The only mention of a locomotive was that one was acquired from the Soo Line to use on the new railroad. Incorporated in December of 1912, it lasted until being sold to the Minneapolis, St Paul & Sault Ste Maire (Soo) in 1915. F&V was its reporting mark but with such a short life, the mark has all but disappeared. No information was listed for this original photo. |

Luraville Loco 4-4-0 |
Description: |
Built by Danforth. Cooke & Co of Patterson, NJ (predecessor of Cooke Locomotive Works) between 1850-1855, this little loco led an interesting life!. It worked for 50 years in the logging industry before an accident in the 1890's caused it to fall in the Suwannee River where it remained until being recovered in 1979. James Lancaster of Luraville, FL, was the man who saved it, hence the name for the loco. After being sold, it was eventually donated in 1982 to the Florida Dept of Agriculture. After much work it was officially recognized with a historic marker and set in a place of honor next to a new depot inTallahassee, FL |

With the changing light in the museum, the GN 4-4-0 #1 "William Crooks" appears dark and its brilliantly polished metalwork looks dim. The loco is anything but dim. This stands as an important piece of railroading history and its journey is fascinating to this railroad buff. Try googling it for fun! |

Description: |
This little switcher served the 7.7 mile short line near Corydon, Indiana until being sold to another tiny indiana short line, the Ferdinand RR sometime between 1950-52. It's sister engine, #9, was the last to be sold to the Ferdinand RR in 1953 after being replaced by a GE 45 ton loco. If anyone knows the builder of this loco, please let me know. Would like to document accurately Indiana railroading as much as I can! |

Description: |
Rare photo of Louisville, New Albany and Corydon's 4-4-0 pulling a combination passenger/baggage car. The little loco survived on the very short Hoosier line until it was replace by the GE 45ton, "Betty Sue" in 1951. The little steamer was sold like its previous sister #5 to the Ferdinand RR where it worked until being replaced by another GE 45 ton #101 in February, 1953. It was eventually scrapped. If anyone knows the original builder of this loco, I would appreciate hearing from you. |

BP 4-4-0 #17 - Boston & Providence |
Description: |
Good looking 4-4-0 example of an inside cylinder design for a steam locomotive. The loco was built in 1858 at the BP shops in Roxbury, MA, and carries the name "Daniel Nason". In 1893 the NYNHH took control and the loco was leased to my alma mater, Purdue University, in 1905. Eventually it was donated to the National Museum of Transportation. |

YV 4-4-0 #21 - Yosemite Valley RR |
Description: |
Sad photo of a once proud locomotive who pulled the passenger trains into Yosemite Valley with a very interesting history.. Originally built by the Wabash shops as Wabash #129 in 1881, it was sold to the Yosemite Valley RR in 1906 and converted to an oil burner. The loco was driven to California by its Wabash engineer, C.H."Charlie" Grant, who stayed on the YV as an engineer. Eventually he reached senority on the line in 1911 and ran #21 in passenger service until his retirement in 1926 (he later died in 1928). During a restoration in 1924, the loco was named "C.H. Grant" in his honor. Eventually, the loco was assigned to El Portal yard for reserve service in 1932. When the YV was granted abandonment in 1945, the loco was scrapped at Merced in 1946. Unknown photographer took this sad view of it sitting by the engine house at El Portal, CA. |

HSJ 35 - Hannibal & St Joseph Rwy |
Description: |
According to Marty Bernard in one of his listings in the RR Picture Archives, this loco was originally built as HSJ #66 in 1892 at the CBQ shops in Aurora IL and became CB&Q #359 when the CBQ took over control of the line. It was retired in 1932 but was rebuilt at Denver for the Century of Progress Exposition as B&MR no. 35. Later it was re-lettered as H&StJ #35. |
