WM # Truck Shay #6 - Western Maryland |
Description: |
Delivered by Lima on May 14, 1945, this three truck Shay was the second largest Shay ever built. It was purchased by the WM to move coal down from Chaffee, WV to the end of the Chaffee Branch at Vindex, MD. #6 only saw five years of service before the mines closed and she was donated to the B&O Museum as a static display. In 1980, she was the center of a trade that ended up with #6 heading to Cass Scenic Railroad. She was immediately put to work in excursion service there. There are a few factors that make me think this may be a photo from 1949 or 1950. The paint striping at the cab window is missingt - something it had in 1981 on. The quality of the photo paper is thicker and slightly sepia toned from age. The image is consistent with older photo qualities. Hence, this may be from 1949-50 in West Virginia. |

SIMPSON Timber & Logging Co #7 |
Description: |
According to the information listed on the back of this photo by the unknown photographer, this plucky Shay was built by Lima Locomotive Works in 1924, serial #3248. After working in the logging business, it iwas retired and is currently a display in a park in Shelton, Washington. It received the nickname "Tollie" after the company owner's wife. Some disagreement as to the reporting mark so I linked both to this page. |

HLRR Shay 3 Truck #33 - Hammond & Little River Redwood Co |
Description: |
Built by Lima in 6/5/1922, this massive, 90 ton, three truck Shay is preserved by the Northern County Logging Interpretive Association. It began as Hammond Lumber Company (Hammond & Little River Redwood Co) No.33. After many years logging the hills around Humboldt County, it changed hands in 1944 and wound up working for Pickering Lumber Corporation at Standard, California, where it last steamed in November 1966. Some time later it was purchased by Glen Bell for display at his Westside & Cherry Valley tourist operation, but since the Shay is standard gauge (and the WS&CV was narrow gauge), it was eventually declared surplus and sold to the NCLIA in 1980.
