BNSF Yard Sign
Title:  BNSF Yard Sign
Description:  Just west of the former ATSF Marceline depot that houses the Walt Disney hometown museum is a little used BNSF yard that has two iconic steam era towers - a coal shute and a sand tower.

ATSF Coal Shute and Sand Tower
Title:  ATSF Coal Shute and Sand Tower
Description:  Rising like concrete monoliths of a forgotten steam era are these two towers just west of downtown Marceline, MO. Several online sources have said it is not cost efficient for railroads to tear down these solidly built structures unless they interfere with modern service.

ATSF Coal Shute
Title:  ATSF Coal Shute
Description:  The coal shute (tower) used to sit over the mainline but much of the trackage in this yard has been removed so the towers stand in the middle of an empty area now. The modern mainline and sidings lie just east of the towers. They sure knew how to build concrete structures back then! Does anyone know when this was built?

ATSF Coal Shute - Marceline, MO
Title:  ATSF Coal Shute - Marceline, MO
Description:  Using a telephoto lens, I caught the side of this concrete monolith. The top control tower would have given a fantastic view of the trains in the yard at one time. Now it looks out on a mostly empty lot since the tracks beneath it have been removed.

ATSF Sand Tower
Title:  ATSF Sand Tower
Description:  The round former ATSF sand tower sits a distance away from the coal shute and like the coal shute, it no longer serves its original purpose since the tracks beneath it have also been reomved.

ATSF Coal Shute and Sand Tower
Title:  ATSF Coal Shute and Sand Tower
Description:  My telephoto lens makes the two towers seem like they are standing right next to each other but that is not true. Take a look at the second photo or the last Google map image in this album to see the distance betweern them.

Title:  ATSF Coal Shute and Sand Tower
Description:  Here is another compressed view from my telephoto lens that makes the two concrete monolithic towers seem like they are standing right next to each other. They are not!

ATSF Yard Aerial View (Google Maps)
Title:  ATSF Yard Aerial View (Google Maps)
Description:  A current aerial view of the once fairly large yard now shows most of it has been ripped up with the coaling and sand towers now standing as isolated islands in a sea of dirt (lower left). Still, the two are impressive to see - wish I could have gone up closer to them to see more of their details.

ATSF SD40 #5008 on Display
Title:  ATSF SD40 #5008 on Display
Description:  The wide oval "Santa Fe" logo looks like a mouth on the front of the short hood end. The twin headlights look like the nose and the number boards (or windows) look like the eyes. Okay, a little crazy to personify a loco.

BNSF ROW South Direction (west line)
Title:  BNSF ROW South Direction (west line)
Description:  This is the former ATSF double track mainline in Marceline, MO, now BNSF property. The former ATSF depot can be seen as the brick building to the distant right of the tracks. This now houses the Walt Disney hometown museum - the reason we were in Marceline, MO.
