Interesting original photo from a negative in the R.B. Sanborn collection. Built in October 1883 by Taunton as Eastern Railroad 107, later B&M 207, named LOVELL, this 4-4-0 American type steam locomotive is supplying the power to push the B&M snow plow wedge #3616. Location is unknown and the date is approximate.

BM 4-4-0 #950 - Boston & Maine
Description:
This appears to be a reprint from the 1940-50's era of a 1915 photograph possibly done by K.E. Schlachter of a 1915 photograph. The locomotive was built in 1900 by the Manchester Locomotive Works just before the formation of the American Locomotive Works (Alco). This American-type locomoitve was originally numbered 633. This loco was used most often in suburban service out of Boston's North Station. Specifics - class A-41, 69" drivers, 18x24" cylinders, respectable 190 psi boiler pressure, 18,200 lb tractive effort, engine weight of 115.00 lbs.

Title:
BM 2-8-4 #4006 - Boston & Maine (Cobra hooded)
Description:
Nice original action shot of the of the unusual and problem plagued 1928 Lima built 2-8-4 Berkshire for the Boston and Maine. One unique feature was the "Cobra Hood" Coffin feedwater heater that wrapped as a collar around the smokebox. According to www.steamlocomotive.com "From the beginning, the B&M had problems with their Lima built "Berkshires". The problem was with the trailing four-wheel truck. Because of the large firebox and large ash pan the locomotive had to have an articulated frame. The back end of the firebox had to rest on a moving base and it was subject to buffeting and twisting, resulting in chronic leakage at the mud ring, side sheet stay bolts and the throat sheet, as it tried to wiggle from side to side to follow the motion of the trucks. Also, this arrangement would sometimes cause the rear wheels to derail while backing up." Eventually ten in the class were sold to SP and 7 were sold to ATSF in July of 1945. Specs - 63" drivers, 28"x30" cylinders, 240 psi,engine weight of 406,900 lb, tractive effort of 76,160 lb.

With B&M 4-4-0 #1029 missing its headlight, number boards, rods and bell, the loco must be on its way to the scrapper's torch. Built in 1911 by Alco-Manchester, the loco was the last of the A-41 class to be built. These 4-4-0's were used primarily in suburban service but #1029 only got a chance to serve 22 years. Description:
Fine example of the "cobra hooded" 2-8-4 Berkshire built by Lima in May of 1928. The "hood" was a curving feedwater heater that gave the loco a unique look. Specs - serial #7281, T-1a class, 63" drivers, 210 psi boiler pressure, 28x30" cylinders, engine weight of 406,900 lb, tractive effort of 66,640 lb. B&M sold this loco and six other class members to ATSF in 1945. This loco was renumbered ATSF 4794 and lasted until late 1949 before being scrapped. Unknown photographer

The Manchester Locomotive Works built this American style locomotive sometime between 1900-11. It was an A-41 class unit with 69" drivers and 190 psi boiler pressure. BM #916 - Boston & Maine
Description:
Here is a very early locomotive built by the Manchester Locomotive Works in 1893. It was a B&M class A-38a with 64" drivers. It generated a modest boiler pressure of 150 psi for its 18"x24" cylinders. The engine weight was a petite 100,800 lb and it produced a tractive effot a mere 15,491 lb but worked well with the early passenger and freight car weights of its time. A note on back of the photo states that this locomotive was "scrapped 1937" but Steamlocomotive.com website has it scrapped much earlier, in 1923. No photographer identified.

Here is a very old and unfortunately deteriorating photo of a 1928 Baldwin built 0-8-0 for the Boston & Maine RR. It was their class H-3a with 52" drivers. Surprisingly it could generate a whopping 250 psi boiler pressure to deliver to its 23"x28" cylinders. The class was retired by 5/1951. BM #4000 - Boston & Maine, The "Cobra Hooded" Coffin Heater Model
Description:
One of the more unusual feedwater configurations is this "cobra hooded" Coffin type. Not sure why the photo is labeled "Schenectady Locomotive Works" at the bottom unless it was visiting for some reason since this was built by the Lima Locomotive Works in Ohio in 1928. It had 63" drivers and could develop an impressive 240 psi of boiler pressure for its 28"x30" cylinders and produced a respectable 66,500 lb of tractive effort but according to several sources, Boston & Maine were unhappy with its performance - leakages and derailing often when backing. During WWII, Boston & Maine sold their problems to Southern Pacific and Santa Fe who were in dire need of power out west. Date and location are approximate. No photographer listed.

Another example of the "Mountain" type locomotives built by Baldwin in 1941 for the Boston & Maine. Each carried a name chosen by a pulbic contest. "Black Arrow" was the winner for #4113. Specifics - class R-1, 73" drivers, 240 psi boiler pressure, 28"x31" cylinders, engine weight of 416,100 lb, tractive effort of 67,918 lb. No date or location given. Wearing a snowplow on the front, this 1905 Alco-Schenectady built Consolidation-type loco was B&M class K-7. It had 61" drivers and generated a respectable boiler pressure of 200 psi to deliver to its 20"x30" cylinders. The engine weight was 170,000 lb and it could produce a tractive effort of 33,443 lb. Badly deteriorating orginal photo of Boston & Maine 0-8-0 yard switcher built by Alco-Schenectady in 1922. The actual photo may very well disappear in the next few years so I found it compelling to share it now. Specs (USRA standards) - H-2-a class, 52" drivers, 175 psi boiler pressure, 25x28" cylinders, engine weight of 221,000 lb. All 22 in the class was retired by July of 1957. No photographer was listed for the photo.

Description:
BM 3710 was one of the last ten 4-6-2 locomotives that Lima would ever make for any railroad. To mark the delivery of these 10, Boston & Maine sponsored a naming contest among New England K-8 students. The winning name for this first loco was "Peter Cooper" seen as a plate on the side. BM #4018 - Boston & Maine, The "Cobra-Hooded" Coffin Model
Description:
Like its sister #4000 in this album, this unusual "cobra hooded" Coffin feedwater heater equipped locomotive was an unusual sight. Built by Lima in 1928, this class T1a Berkshire-type locomotive had 63" drivers, generated an impressive 240 psi of boiler pressure for its 28"30" cylinders, had an engine wieght of 406,900 lb, and could produce a respectable tractive effort of 76,160 lb. With all of that however, Boston & Maine had problems with the class from the very beginning - mostly due to the trailing 4 wheel turck which caused twisting motion on curves that produced leakages and often resulted in derailing when backing. B&M sold the class to Southern Paciifc and Santa Fe during WWII. No photographer listed for this photo. The day in 1938 is an approximation.
