BO 4-6-4 #5047 - Baltimore & Ohio
Title:  BO 4-6-4 #5047 - Baltimore & Ohio
Description:  This appears to be an original builder's photo of the 4-6-4 Hudson #5047 built by the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad shops. The B&O shops at Mount Clare built four unique Hudsons. The first was a conversion and the other three were built from the ground up. Each of these locomotives was a different and unique design. The first Hudson was built in 1933 and was a conversion of a Class P-1c, number 5047 (seen here in its original sepia color) done at Mt. Clare in Baltimore, MD. This locomotive was given Class V-1 designation and had 74" drivers, 21.5 x 28 cylinders and weighed 355,000 lbs and had a tractive effort of 52,000 lbs. This locomotive was used successfully on the Cumberland, Pittsburgh and Akron divisions and was retired in 1950.

BO 4-4-4 #1, "Lady Baltimore" - Baltimore & Ohio
Title:  BO 4-4-4 #1, "Lady Baltimore" - Baltimore & Ohio
Description:  Here is a unique 1934 Baltimore & Ohio shops creation - B&O 4-4-4 #1, dubbed "Lady Baltimore" and the only one built with this wheel configuration by B&O. According to www.steamlocomotive.com "This unusual locomotive was designed to be a lightweight engine along the lines of successful British light passenger types. The cylinder dimensions are modest, the water-tube boiler pressure relatively high at 350 psi. The tall drivers were worthy of note. The exposed Walschaerts valve gear is all-American. Although it was operated both on the B&O and on the Alton, it was not a great success. The factor of adhesion alone suggests how slippery this engine could be." Specs - 84" drivers, 350 psi boiler pressure, 17.5x28" cylinders, engine weight of 217,800 lb and a modest tractive effort of 30,370 lb. Unknown photographer.

BO 2-8-0 #1598
Title:  BO 2-8-0 #1598
Description:  This 1899 Baldwin built Consolidation was caught by F. J. Bandi parked along with others in the Washington, IN, yard. Originally built for the B&OSW as a class H-2 member with the original number of 298, it was acquired by B&O in 1904, reclassified it as E-26 around 1905 and eventually retired 7/19/35. There is still a yard in Washington, IN, which I believe serves CSX now.

BO 0-8-0 #614
Title:  BO 0-8-0 #614
Description:  The photographer of this badly deteriorating photo identifies this as a 1928 Baldwin built 0-8-0 switcher. However, Chuck Zeiler offered an accurate history of this loco. Built by Alco-Richmond in January of 1906, this loco started as B&O 2-8-0 #2673. Original specs - - class E-27, 62" drivers, 205 psi boiler pressure, 22x30" cylinders, engine weight of 208,500, tractive effort of 40,800 lb. In 1925, the loco was rebuilt at Mt Clare Shops into an 0-8-0 yard switcher. New specs - renumbered #614, reclassified as L-2, 62" drivers, 207 psi boiler pressure, 25 1/2x30" cylinders, engine weight of 221,000 lb, tractive effort of 55,360 lb. The loco was scrapped in September of 1954. No location or date was given for the photo. Thanks Chuck for your help with this one. It is very much appreciated!
