Description:
Good looking face on a 1904 Burnham, Wms & Co built 4-4-2 steam locomotive. Specs - class 507, 79" drivers, 220 psi boiler pressure, 15x26" high pressure cylinders, 25x26" low pressure cylindeers, engine weight of 202,400 lb, tractive effort of 20,364 lb. In the late 1920's ATSF scrapped quite a few of their Atlantics and simplified the remaining ones for further use. No date, location or photographer given for this original photo.

Description:
As the earliest example of an Atlantic type locomotive in this album, it was built by Burnham, Williams & Co (Baldwin) in 1904 as class 507 (first loco in series was #507). It had 79" drivers and produced an impressive 220 psi boiler pressure. This is a Forrest Trittenbach photo. The day in 1938 is approximate.

Description:
#542 was a popular number that appeared on 3 separate locomotives for the Santa Fe, but this was the original and only steam locomotive in the group. Built by Burnham, Wms & Co (Baldwin) in 1904, it was the first in the 542 class of Atlantics. Specifics - 79" drivers, impressive 220 psi boiler pressure, Vauclain balanced-compound Atlantic with 15x26" high pressure cylinders and 25x26" low pressure cylinders, engine weight of 208,110 lb, tractive effort of 20,364 lb. The negative was listed as a Riley one & the photo from John F. Boose photo collection. The photo has degraded over time. A "cleaned up" version is also in this album.

ATSF 4-4-2 #1420 - Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe
Description:
Built by Burnham, Williams & Co (Baldwin) in 1904, it was classified according to ATSF policy of using the first loco number in the series as the class, hence class 1400. It had 79" drivers and developed an impressive 220 psi boiler pressure. As one of the lucky ones in the class to not be scrapped in the 1920's, it was rebuilt by the ATSF shops in 1926-29. The rebuilt group lasted through the 1930's with the last one being scrapped in 1948. Forrest Trittenbach photo. Date is approximate.

Description:
Built by Burnham, Wms & Co (Baldwin) 1905, this Santa Fe class 1400 had tall 79" drivers and could produce an impressive 220 psi boiler pressure for its compound cylinders (15"x26" and 25"x26"). The engine weight was 208.770 lb and it could produce a tractive effort of 20,364 lb, Late, the Santa Fe shops simplified the loco with just 22"26" cylinders. No photographer identified.

Description:
Built by Baldwin in 1910, the 4-4-2 Atlantic style steam locomotive was nicknamed Bull Mooser for the odd 3 dome appearance and external steam piping like the one in the photo. In the 1920's, the class was simplified and superheated which changed its unusual 3 dome look. They were very handy for branch-line local passenger service and lasted until the early 1950's. Original specs - class 1480, 73" drivers, 220 psi, 15x26" high pressure cylinders, 25x26" low pressure cylinders, engine weight of 231,675 lb, tractive effort of 22,038 lb. No date, location or photographer was listed for the photo so approximates were used.

ATSF 4-4-2 #1485
Description:
This appears to be a reprint due to the image quality, possibly a photo positive of a builder's photo. Built by Baldwin in 1910, the class had the nickname of "Bull Moosers" due to the unusual domes and piping. According to the American Engineer & RR Journal "A somewhat startling arrangement of steam pipes is a prominent feature in the design, and is clearly indicated in the accompanying illustration. The steam is taken from the boiler at the rear dome and through two 5 in. pipes carried to the forward dome in which the throttle valve is located." Also noteworthy is the three equal-sized domes on the boiler, the central one was the sand dome and the two flanking domes held steam, the reverse of the usual layout. Note that another steam pipe emerged near the smokebox on either side after passing through a smokebox reheater that measured 1,147 sq ft in area; this pipe entered the outside low-pressure cylinders. No information was listed for this photo.

This 1910 Baldwin built Atlantic type locomotive was a departure from the normal configuration and prone to leaks. The Forrest Trittenbach photo was labeled as taken in Purpis, Col, but no location matches the name. With Mike Woodruff's help (see comment below), the location is Pueblo Union Depot.
