MILW E4, Milwaukee Road (originally numbered 10253) |
Description: |
Built in 1919 by GE, this unique bipolar unit and its 4 sisters served the Milwaukee Road in the Mountain division faithfully for 35 years hauling long trains both passenger and freight at speeds up to 70 MPH. A poorly done 1953 rebuild by the MILW shops doomed these units, finally being retired in 1958-60 and scrapped in 1962. |

MILW "Little Joe" E74 - Milwaukee Road |
Description: |
When the order for electric locomotives bound for the Soviet Union in 1946 was cancelled, these locos, labeled "Little Joes" were sold to the Milwaukee Road and Chicago South Shore & South Bend. This is an example of the 12 axle powered unit. Unfortunately the b&w photo doesn't show the brilliant orange and black color scheme. Thanks to Bob Bateman (see comment below), the location is Missoula, MT. No photographer was listed for this photo. The day in October, 1972, is approximate. |
