CR GG1 #4850 |
Description: |
A very moody photo of a line of GG1's sitting just outside the Harrisburg, PA, station, probably the beginning of the scrap line that would start with the change-over in the power grid that sidelined most of the GG1's. The date for this photo is approximate. The loco was built by the PRR Altoona shops and Westinghouse in May of 1935 and served not only the Pennsy but Penn Central and eventually Conrail. It was formally retired in February of 1980. An unknown photographer took this photo. |

PC 4859 - Penn Central |
Description: |
No date listed and based on the Whitehead Metals sign on the trackside building, I'm guessing Windsor, NY, as the location. this GG1 is noteworthy as being the first electric locomotive to run between Philadelphia and Harrisburn with the inaugural train, Train #25 the Metropolitan, on January 15, 1938. It also pulled the last GG1-powered freight train on November 22, 1979. Originally stored at Strasburg, it was moved to its current location at the Harrisburg Transporation Center in 1986 and was listed on the National Register of Histroic Places in 1982 and designated the state electric locomotive of Pennsylvania in 1987. |

Description: |
The late afternoon sun puts a shine on this sad sight of Conrail GG1 #4859 and sister #4887 sitting in the Enola, PA, scrap lilne two years after being retired in February of 1980. Built by PRR's Altoona and GE in December of 1937, it served PRR, PC and CR before its 43 years of service came to an end. Conrail conductor Ken Taylor captured this sad moment in the life of the locomotive. However, #4859 did not perish but was rescued, restroed cosmetically and placed on display at the Transportation Center in Harrisburg, PA. Appropriate place to be displayed since this loco pulled first electric train to Harrisburg from Philadelphia in 1938. |

Once the sleek symbol of Pennsy passenger speed, the GG1's later were relegated to freight duties. A note on the back of the photo by photographer D. Woodland states "Symbol freight PGPI. 10 am westbound." |

PRR GG1 #4935 |
Description: |
Built in 1943 by the PRR Juniata shops along with GE in Altoona, the stylish welded carbody design of Raymond Loewy is awe inspiring. IMHO, this is one of the most beautiful locomotives ever. I only wish I could have witnessed it running the rails! |

This is one of the very last GG1's built by Altoona in 1943. Could it be blowing steam from its passenger steam generator on this day? No photographer listed. Date and location are unknown. |

CR GG1 #4937 |
Description: |
A sad moment in the life of this powerful, sleek locomotive - whitelined in the scrap siding at Altoona, PA. Built by the PRR Altoona shops and Westinghouse in April of 1943, this would be the 2nd to the last one ever built. It served the PRR, PC and Conrail rosters until retirement in 1979. However, according to Joe Roger's album in RRPA, this loco somehow ended up at Cooperstown Junction, NY. A plaque that Joe Rogers photographed in 2006 there states "2000 In Memory of Robert E. Anderson, The GG1 Rehabilitation Society" Unfortunately, this was not PRR GG1 #4937 that made it to Cooperstown Junction - it was scrapped after retirement. According to online sources, the Cooperstown Junction GG1 is PRR 4917 (ex-AMTK 4934). Does anyone know if it's still there? No photographer was identified for this photo. |

CR GG1 #4937 |
Description: |
Here is another view of the once mighty GG1 as it sits whitelined in the Altoona scrap line. The photo was taken by an unknown photographer. According to a more recent album on RRPA by Joe Rogers, this loco ended up at Cooperstown Junction, NY, with a plaque that Joe Rogers photographed stating "2000 In Memory of Robert E. Anderson, The GG1 Rehabilitation Society". But from the pics that Joe posted, it sure doesn't look like the society was able to rehabilitate #4937. Does anyone know of the current disposition of this loco? |
