PRR 4-4-4-4 #5507
Description:
This unique experimental 4-4-4-4 wheel configuration was built by the PRR's Altoona Shops in 1945. It lasted 8 years before being scrapped in 1953. According to Wikipeida, tje T1 duplex drive 4-4-4-4 steam locos were ambitious, technologically sophisticated, powerful, fast and distinctively streamlined by Raymond Loewy. However, they were also prone to wheelslip both when starting and at speed, in addition to being complicated to maintain and expensive to run. Partial specs - T-1 class, 80" drivers, 300 psi, massive engine weight of 502,200 lb, tractive effort 64,653 lb,

PRR 4-4-4-4 #6110
Description:
This later T1 duplex was built by Baldwin in 1942. The exterior styling was designed by Raymond Loewy, According to SteamLocomotive.com " The theory behind the duplex drive held that reducing the masses of reciprocating (e.g., main and side rods) and revolving (e.g., cranks and counterweights) would reduce hammering and raise speed. Tests run at a high boiler pressure and late cut-off showed 6,110 drawbar horsepower at 85 mph. In service, these engines could be fast, powerful, and smooth, pulling 910-ton passenger trains at 100 mph. According to most sources, the divided drive proved to be a major maintenance headache, however, because no way could be found to stop one or the other driver-cylinder set from slipping, either starting or, more alarmingly, at high speed. This liability proved fatal to the chances for real success for these engines, and they were retired well before the much earlier vintage K-4 Pacifics." Roger D. Kruger photo

CO Steam Turbine #501
Description:
Three experimental steam turbine locomotives were built for the Chesapeake & Ohio by Baldwin and Westinghouse in 1948-49. They had conventional fire-tube boilers mounted backward to regular practice. They were streamlined and looked like nothing else on the rails. They were built for speeds of 100 miles per hour. The only problem was that they were incredibly complex. They spent much more time in the shop than on the rails. Coal dust fouled the forward traction motors and water dripping from the boiler often short circuited the traction motors on the other two powered trucks. Eventually they were quietly scrapped in 1950. C.W. Jernstrom photo

YV 4-4-0 #22 - Yosemite Valley RR
Description:
Alco, 1907, one of a pair built by Alco Specs - serial #43167, class 22, 63" drivers, modest 165 psi boiler pressure, 18x26" cylinders, modest engine weight of 110,000 lb, very modest tractive effort of 18,753 lb. The little loco was scrapped in 1948. No date, location or photographer was listed for the photo. Although the correct reporting mark is YVRR, that current belongs to Yadkin Valley so I have listed it both as YVRR and just YV.
